James Dolan Hasn’t Changed
The biggest downside to the Knicks winning a NBA championship is that James Dolan, one of the worst owners in sports, gets to feel as if he’s accomplished something. Like a lot of people, I saw the video of Dolan’s pre-playoff speech to the players, which, for about 10 minutes, made him really likeable. And then Dolan, Dolan’ed.
As the Knicks have been taking their much-deserved victory lap, Dolan has been inserting himself in ways that remind you that he is the asshole we’ve always known him to be and no amount of winning is going to sanitize the negative reputation he so richly deserves.
Let’s review the tape: Dolan essentially exiled Charles Oakley, one of the most beloved Knicks in the history of the organization after an incident at Madison Square Garden. Oakley and Dolan’s beef stemmed from Oakley’s criticisms of the team, and Oakley’s 2017 arrest was the culmination of the simmering discord between the two. Dolan initially banned Oakley from MSG and though he later lifted the ban, Oakley hasn’t been back to MSG. Big Oak and his wife, Angela, did attend the Knicks’ series-ending game in San Antonio, but they deserved to be more in the mix. Most of us sided with Oakley anyway because Dolan just isn’t well liked.
Dolan also had issues with Spike Lee, probably the most famous Knick fan on the planet. Things got so bad that Spike accused Dolan of harrassment and in 2020, Spike vowed not to return to a Knicks game that season.
