Note: Apologies for getting this week’s newsletter out much later than anticipated. Blame UFC President Dana White. No, seriously. I spent a lot of the last 24 hours explaining the actions of one of his meathead fighters. More on that to come.
In this issue of Emptying The Notebook: What the Knicks’ championship run means beyond just sports .. The UFC disaster at The White House … my three-day trip to Atlanta … and a plea to those who bag food for delivery. Also, don’t forget to drop me a line at [email protected].
The Knicks Remind Us Everything Isn’t Shitty
I’ve nearly given up on the idea that we will one day overcome our racial, political and economic differences. Sports, however, just keeps cramming us together and making me believe that we actually have a shot and not being constantly terrible to each other.
Seeing the New York Knicks win their first NBA championship in 53 years felt good. I’m not from New York and generally don’t root for New York teams, but this was different. Watching Knicks fans flood the streets to watch the games as a basketball family really was food for the soul. Fans crowded around televisions outside bodegas and bars. They gathered for official watch parties that were spread out across the five burroughs. Sometimes, they were just hanging out and soaking up the energy of the moment. They chanted, hollered, fist pumped, cried, and chest-bumped, high-fived. Perfect strangers were just loving each other down.
This is was sports was meant to do.
